We roast to order at our state-of-the-art facility located in downtown Portland, Maine. That means the coffee you receive is fresh, prepared just for you. We offer a selection of single origin, blends, water-processed decaf, and flavored coffees – from long-time bestsellers to limited edition beans. We have a passion for what we do – both in the product we produce and the way in which we do business. We choose to grow in a way that is sustainable, and we work with restaurants, cafes, and specialty businesses that share these values.

About Us

As an artisan craft roastery, we take the words handcrafted seriously. We have a strong reputation among many of the area’s top chefs with whom we have worked closely to develop unique coffee blends to complement their menus. Our coffee is served at many of Portland’s finest restaurants, several of which are James Beard Award winners. Coffee By Design coffee can be enjoyed nationwide at select coffeehouses, cafes, restaurants and gourmet shops. And may be ordered on-line.

We are proud of our Washington Avenue facility which houses our Craft Roastery, Origins Bar, and offices. It showcases our partnership with Efficiency Maine which has led to a more sustainable building. Our building includes reused cabinetry, no VOC paint and carpeting, and efficient lighting fixtures. We have added solar power to the mix of sustainable measures at this property. View the power usage and savings on an ipad mounted to the wall in the Washington Ave coffee shop!
