Spectacular Foliage - Stunning Views, Crisp Air & Fall Harvest
With crisp air and gorgeous foliage, autumn is ideal for leaf
peepers to enjoy the fall foliage. Head up or down the coast or into the
Western Mountains for the day or long weekend to view spectacular scenery
during the height of foliage season. Visitors will find fall prime time to
enjoy the beauty of Casco Bay by taking a fall cruise on the water. Most of the
local excursion boats continue their schedules into early October, and Casco
Bay Lines provides island-commuting services year-round.
A Fall Harvest Bounty
Many visitors to the area take in Maine’s fall harvest by visiting an
apple orchard during September and October to pick their own, collect
pumpkins, enjoy a hayride, or tour an area working farm. Visitors can schedule
a trip to coincide with Great Maine Apple Day at the Union Fairgrounds, or
many of the county fairs that begin in August and continue through September
until the Fryeburg Fair in October ends the season. Harvest on the Harbor,
the Convention + Visitor Bureau's celebration of the Food and Wine scene punctuates
the season each year.
Cultural Activities & Sporting
Fall is ideal for taking in a show, and options are a bounty of their own.
Check in with Portland Stage,
a professional theatre organization, which starts its season in September. Merrill
Auditorium, the home of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, in Portland begins its
season in October and runs through the winter and spring. Portland’s nightlife
hits its heights in the fall at area hotspots, and local sporting events kick
off their seasons as well: enjoy minor league hockey by rooting for the
Portland Pirates through the fall and winter, or check out the Maine Red Claws,
Portland's NBA development league.
