Meet the Chinook Breed

Who doesn’t love a puppy? Join us for a presentation on the Chinook – a breed of sled dog developed in New England in the early 20th century – including its impactful history and the work being done today to preserve this breed that has faced extinction for decades. This program will include a friendly “meet and greet” with some Maine Chinooks, ranging in age from pups to seniors! This program is offered as a companion to our exhibit Best Friends: Mainers and Their Pets.

About the presenter: Penthea Burns got her first Chinook, Katahdin, in 1995. She and her dear friend created Great Mountain Chinooks, which bred their first litter in 1999. They’ve since produced over 300 Chinooks, served on National breed clubs, established a New England Chinook club, mentored many new breeders, and even produced a book of poetry about life with a pack of Chinooks. Free and open to the public.
