  • Experience a unique day of history, landscape, and community at one of Maine’s most storied coastal farms in the Harraseeket Historic District, the largest in Maine. Join MHS for morning coffee followed by our 203rd Annual Meeting at the beautiful Smith Center for Education & Research at Wolfe’s Neck Center in Freeport. Hear about all that’s happening at MHS and what’s ahead—including exciting updates, a preview of future plans, the announcement of new Trustees, and recognition of this year’s award winners. In a richly-illustrated presentation following the business meeting, Kathy Smith will present an overview of the layers of history above and below ground at Wolfe’s Neck, and Libby Bischof will discuss the value of place-based history for students and visitors of all ages and how it connects them more deeply with their communities. You will also hear about land conservation and organic farming pioneers Eleanor and Lawrence Smith, whose foresight laid the foundation for today’s Wolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture and the Environment, the Smith Family’s recent donation of Smith Family archives to the Maine Historical Society, and future plans for the Casco History Lab, to be headquartered in a nearby 1750s saltbox house moved to the site by boat by Capt. Greenfield Pote—likely Freeport’s oldest surviving building.
