Coffee Shops & Tea Houses

Neighborhood Coffee Shops & Tea Rooms Serve to Calm & Invigorate

Portland is a coffee town, and the importance of the city’s local coffee shops cannot be underestimated – they are part of the fabric of the community. Independents, "neighborhood” coffee shops, and deeply embedded institutions, primarily known for their quality beans, are kept vital by virtue of their service, ambiance, and fiercely loyal customers.

Portland’s urban, big-city feel translates to its coffee providers with knowledgeable baristas and unique communal environments – each coffee shop, café, and tea room features its own distinct attributes. Coffee lovers will be pleased to know that many area coffee shops source, roast, and prepare their cups with careful attention, many roasting their beans right in the city. Tea lovers will feel at home as well, finding comfortable tea rooms and cafés with traditional tea selections, locally-sourced loose teas, and trendy bubble teas.

Many coffeehouses roast their beans right in the city, and true coffee enthusiast will find pourovers, lattes and espressos that rival java shops anywhere in the country. But their unique spaces are another part of what makes them so loved – some with an industrial feel, others with bright open spaces overlooking the harbor, still others with nooks to settle in with a laptop and enjoy the refills and fresh-baked accompaniments.

Those inclined toward leaves over beans should know that teahouses in the area represent a thriving segment. Area tearooms in the city and neighboring towns have enjoyed a renaissance of nostalgia where scheduled lunches and afternoon tea in the garden or among charming collectibles allow visitors to enjoy a pot with a warm scone or a finger sandwich.

Tea enthusiasts favoring concoctions are also well taken care of in the region at traditional Chinese tea houses or houses offering herbal fusions and specialty blends that serve to heal, calm, stimulate, and treat common ailments. Better yet, make your tea selection while enjoying an herbal-infused foot soak and massage – it’s possible, right here in Portland.
