About Us

A national historic landmark, the Western Cemetery was Portland’s first planned graveyard. While the 20th century brought destruction, neglect and vandalism, a multi-year effort of stone restoration and cleaning, along with landscape and infrastructure improvements, is giving new respect to these 19th century Portland residents. In the Western Cemetery there are sea captains, Civil War Veterans, artists, poets, community leaders, Irish immigrants, and more.

The Stewards of the Western Cemetery invite you to see the progress we are making in the restoration of this historic cemetery, and hear stories of the lives of the people buried there.  Free public tours are offered Sundays at 2 PM from May through October.

To request a tour at another time, email tours@westerncemetery.me.
