Skiing / Sledding / Skating

For outdoor enthusiasts winter is a favorite season in Maine

Loved by visitors and locals alike for its abundant snowfall and the outdoor activities it brings. Skiing and snowboarding are at the top of the list of those activities. Maine and snow sports go hand in hand, both because of the state’s expansive cross country trails and its world renowned downhill resorts. Winter adventure? You’ve come to the right place.

Cross-country skiing on a blanket of fresh snow is any Mainer’s idea of a perfect day. Many private properties welcome skiers in the winter – visitors can seek out land trusts and state parks and plenty of community trails in Portland and neighboring towns.

In Greater Portland skiers can cross-country ski alongside the ocean, across golf courses and through scented pine forests – the 25 km of groomed Nordic trails at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester is a place to start. Or head to L.L. Bean Outdoor Discovery Schools, which offer inexpensive "Walk-On Adventures" in cross-country skiing and snowshoeing right from their retail store in Freeport.

Day trips from Portland to some of the best skiing in the country is what makes the area a winter destination. When the snow falls, the slopes are superb, and even when it doesn’t, ski resorts are making snow and grooming trails to be their best. Visitors will recognize the names of Maine’s most famous ski areas, and will find lesser-known peaks as well. Note also that those with "half-pipe” as part of their vocabulary will find the mountains a snowboarder’s paradise. Trails range from beginner to precipitous, and the views are awesome. Sticking around for a meal and entertainment is always a great additional ski activity.

Ski areas offer plenty of packages and getaways along with discounts and ski passes, as if they could sweeten such a deal.
