GREEN CERTIFIED PROPERTIES

LEADING THE CHARGE ON PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT

Visitors come to Greater Portland for a Maine experience that often means immersing themselves in the wonders of the natural world where people are doing right by their communities and their environment. These values are very much part of Maine’s character. Portland hotels, motels and inns proudly live up to this standard.

Less an afterthought than a part of the culture for many businesses in the Portland region, their commitment to reducing their environmental impact and protecting our local resources inspires residents and guests alike. Portland lodging establishments are quick to point out they do not sacrifice amenities or comfort with these initiatives. For many, Green is business as usual.

Reducing our footprint

Protecting the coastline, mountains, lakes and all of the region’s natural resources is of the utmost importance to those who serve the visitors who come to enjoy them. Green properties take action to reduce their footprint on earth in myriad ways. They may do so by tending and making use of gardens to provide food, or by buying local seafood, beef and produce, and supporting organic farming. Many properties compost, use green, natural, or locally-made products. Some have constructed their sites eco-consciously from the ground up. Yet others pro-actively participate in programs which fund environmental programs.

environmental leaders

Maine was the third state in the nation to establish an Environmental Leader certification program that encourages restaurants, lodgings and grocery stores to reduce waste and energy use and improve environmental practices. Visitors may consider a hotel, motel, or inn that is certified as a Maine Green Lodging property when booking their stay. Maine Green Lodging properties all post the Environmental Leader badge at their places of business and websites to show their commitment to protecting the state’s natural resources and preserving its attractions for visitors for years to come.
