Birding

Exceptional Year-round Sightings Draw Bird Lovers to Maine

Greater Portland is blessed with world-class birding opportunities year-round, providing winged wonders for the casual birder and those seeking rare sightings. Why here? The variety of habitats, for one – sand beaches, rocky beaches, granite cliffs, estuaries, fresh and saltwater marshes, deciduous and pine forests, urban, suburban, and rural parkland all set the stage for prime birding.

Furthermore, Portland marks a transition point for many species. This is the northern edge for southern warblers such as blue-winged and prairie. It is where Nelson’s and salt marsh sharp-tailed sparrows overlap and hybridize. Brown thrashers, eastern towhees, and grasshopper sparrows become scarce north of Portland. Bald eagles can be spotted in Maine – the state has the largest population in the northeast – and Atlantic puffin colonies are a one-of-kind sight, accessible from the coast when they come to nest in the summer.

Those seeking sightings of seabirds such as great cormorants and the endangered roseate tern, can experience them here. In fact, many of Maine's most interesting birds are in coastal waters. Coastal communities offer of sea tours that attract birders from all over the world, and boat tours for pelagic birding is a Greater Portland specialty.

In addition to the many acres of birding hot spots around the city and its nearby islands, Maine Audubon headquarters is located in nearby Falmouth and two other Maine Audubon sanctuaries are located within Cumberland County. Visitors will find birding opportunities at Scarborough Marsh in Scarborough, or head to Freeport for Feathers over Freeport in spring, a celebrated bird, hawk and osprey-watching event for all ages. Maine also hosts several birding festivals and group events all year – a comprehensive Maine Birding Trail guide is available to provide expert advice and trip planning from the summer loon to the winter owl.
