The WCSH Sidewalk Art Festival, which occurs annually in late August or early September in Portland, is the largest art festival in New England, and one of the best ways to be part of supporting the local arts community. A tradition for over 50 years, this popular celebration of art has most recently attracted 300 artists and 40,000 visitors during its one day in Portland’s Arts District.
The festival runs from Congress Square down to Monument Square. With the street closed, the festival creates a sea of artists and art lovers that may resemble an outdoor gallery where visitors can witness first-hand how much creativity this state inspires and the variety of mediums through which it’s expressed. Artists are available within tents for inquiring about the art, and participants can seek out the perfect piece for their collection, or just enjoy the festive creative atmosphere where the focus is truly on the art and the artist.
