2020 is a big year for Maine. Celebrating 200 years of statehood, we are pulling out all the stops in 2020 with special events, exhibits, parades, air shows - you name it - to showcase the unique offerings of our state. Whether you’ve been waiting for the right time to visit again or are coming for the first time, you’re not going to want to miss this once-in-a-century opportunity.

Maine’s Bicentennial is not just a series of events, but a state of mind for local businesses expressing love for their home state by offering year-round promotions. March 13, 2020 to January 30, 2021  |  Portland

No state captures the feeling of home quite like Maine. Maybe it’s the welcoming atmosphere or the peacefulness of our rolling waves and rocky shores, but if you are a history lover who wants to immerse yourself in the place your visiting don’t miss the upcoming exhibit "State of Mind: Becoming Maine” from Maine Historical Society. You’ll learn what Maine was before it was a state and how it separated from Massachusetts in 1820. As you get to know Maine’s special past, you’ll piece together how the changing landscape may alter Maine’s Future. The exhibition will feature manuscripts and items relating to statehood, historic maps, and contemporary artwork.


March 15, 2020  |  Augusta

Celebrate Maine’s 200th birthday in style with an afternoon of live music, special guests and of course—birthday cake, held at the Augusta Armory in Maine’s state capital. A live orchestra and choir will delight you with musical pieces. Speakers will include members of Maine’s Congressional Delegation, the Penobscot Nation, and the State’s Historian and Poet Laureate.

Classical music lovers will want to catch Portland Symphony Orchestra’s celebration of Maine's Bicentennial. This one night only event will be held in Portland’s historic and stunning Merrill Auditorium. This special concert will be presented to you by the Portland Symphony Orchestra’s globally-recognized Music Director, Eckart Preu. The event will feature the premiere of a commissioned work by Maine-based composer Daniel Sonenberg, titled "First Light: A Fanfare for Maine."

Stories of maine: An Incomplete History

March 28, 2020 to October 15, 2020  |  Portland

Many local art institutions are bringing exhibits and special events, inspired by Maine’s history, throughout the year. Portland Museum of Art is joining the line-up with their take on the British Museum’s "A History of the World in 100 Objects” project. They will be sharing twenty unique stories about Maine’s past, present, and future through 200 years of statehood.

What’s more fun than the high-spirited energy of a parade? Bring the whole family for an afternoon of smiles and celebrations of Maine’s people, culture, landmarks, and history. June 20 to June 21, 2020  |  Owls Head

Cruise into some bicentennial-themed fun with Owls Head Transportation Museum’s first ever exhibiter show. Discover unique displays that will strike your curiosity like an Exhibitor Car Show with vintage car rides, Interactive STEM Displays, Aircraft exercises, tours, and lots of kid-friendly fun along the way. There will be more than a dozen rare, restored, and replica aircrafts of display from their collection. You may even get to ride in one the museum’s free aircraft demos and scenic biplane rides throughout the season.

Daytime Portland Maine Sailing Ships on Casco Bay near Fort Gorges


June 26 to July 20, 2020  |  Coast of Maine

From air to sea, The Maine Bicentennial Sailing Ships Festival will begin in Boothbay Harbor, on June 26, 2020. The crown jewel of the event is the Parade of Sail, on July 16, 2020, in Portland. Legions of dock-sided vessels will be ready to carry you away for sailing excursions through July 19, 2020. Each port of call will feature on land activities and dockside access for the public. Ports of call will include Bangor, Belfast, Boothbay Harbor, Bucksport, Castine, Portland, Rockland, and Searsport.


July 29 and 31, 2020  |  Portland

The famous, supernatural epic you know set on the scenic Maine coast. The cursed captain of a ghostly ship comes ashore every seven years in search of faithful love that will set him free. Opera Maine’s production of this legend brings the Dutchman to the coast of Maine after a violent storm. Maestro Israel Gurksy conducts the Opera Maine Orchestra and Dona D. Vaughn directs a talented cast headed by Mark Delavan in the title role.
