Top Ten Coffee Cities


Seattle gets all the buzz for being java central, but it was bumped out of the top spot in our rankings by Portland, Maine.

Apparently, folks in Portland, Maine were hooked on coffee early and hard: In the run-up to the American Revolution, New Englanders' famous resistance to paying steep taxes on tea encouraged them to embrace the brown bean instead, explains Sandy Oliver, a New England food historian and the author of Maine Home Cooking. Of course, this corner of the nation also gave rise to a more recent coffee revolution: All those Keurig machines? You can credit (or blame) Green Mountain Coffee Roasters in Vermont.
