More About Maine Brew Bus:

Having a designated driver to guide you to both established and up-and-coming producers offers an opportunity to learn much more about the craft alcohol business than you could learn on your own. Tours are led by expert guides in addition to a knowledgeable designated driver to ensure the best possible experience for our guests as well as for the businesses with which we partner. The all-inclusive tours on our bright green school buses provide you a behind-the-scenes look at Maine's craft breweries, distilleries, wineries, and more. We offer daily scheduled and private tours in Greater Portland and Southern Maine. We also offer frequent specialty and adventure tours, and we even partner with local teams for tours that end at minor league hockey and baseball games. The fleet now includes four buses and additional staff. We are proud that we have been awarded the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence each of the last three years because of our highly rated tours. For our first stop, we’ll be visiting Island Dog Brewing. Island Dog Brewing was established in 2016 by Jim Denz and Tim Francis, and are now the third brewery to call South Portland home. They produce primarily Belgian and German-inspired beers (including herb and spice ales), and the company name comes from the owner’s love of rescue dogs and the sheer beauty of Coastal Maine. Jim spent time in the Army, worked as a high school teacher, and spent many years working in technology. Jim met Tim, who has experience with home brewing (in addition to a diverse background including retail, food service, and communications) at a beer festival a few years ago. Enjoy their spacious tasting room as you sip on beers infused with ingredients that you didn’t know would taste so good in beer.

Next up, we’ll visit Gruit. Inside Portland’s Urban Farm Fermentory is an experimental brewing lab. This new grain fermentation facility called Gruit is producing alternative styles of beer called gruit and braggots. Gruits are an ancient version of beer that replaces hops with roots, herbs, and other ingredients to create unique flavor combinations. Braggots are grain beers fortified with honey making delicious and tasty variations. Continuing the tradition set by Urban Farm Fermentory, this new operation is turning out some truly memorable beverages in East Bayside.

For our final stop we’ll head to Goodfire Brewing. Goodfire Brewing is the latest beer producer to open in East Bayside, a well known hub within the booming craft alcohol industry of Portland. Founded by David Redding, a physician, they first poured their beers during 2017 Portland Beer Week and opened their tasting room doors shortly after. The comfortable 4,000 square foot space includes a private meeting and event room. The brewing equipment was produced by Tigpro, right here in Portland. The first beers produced by head brewer Gordon Jones were both takes on IPA’s, named Prime and Waves, and were surprisingly immediately available in cans by utilizing their own canning line.

Once we’ve finished the Dirigo Discovery tour, we’ll drop you back off at Old Port Spirits and Cigars, where you can purchase some beer for later and continue your exploration of lively downtown Portland.
