TOP TEN FALL ACTIVITIES

Fall is a great time to enjoy these ten activities, some of which continue through the winter months.

1. Take a trip to enjoy the fall foliage. Head up or down the coast or into the Western Mountains for a day or long weekend to view spectacular scenery during the height of Maine's autumn foliage season.

2. Visit an apple orchard during September and October, and pick your own apples, collect pumpkins, and enjoy a hayride. Continue to celebrate Maine apples on the Great Maine Apple Day at the Union Fairgrounds.

3. Enjoy the beauty of Casco Bay by taking a fall cruise. Most of the local excursion boats continue their schedules into early October and Casco Bay Lines provides island-commuting services year-round.

4. Take in a show. The Portland Stage Company, a professional theatre organization, starts its season in September. The Portland Ovations' concert season also starts in September and continues through the fall and winter. You can enjoy anything from Chinese acrobats to Broadway musicals to string quartets at Merrill Auditorium, the home of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, in Portland. The Symphony's season begins in October and runs through the winter and spring.

5. Listen to jazz at the Café Azure in Freeport any Friday evening or go for rock ‘n roll at any one of a number of nightspots in Portland.

6. Attend one or more of the events at Harvest on the Harbor, the Convention + Visitor Bureau's celebration of the Food and Wine scene in Portland and Southern Maine. Come see what all the buzz is about!

7. Go to a county fair and enjoy the celebration of country life. County Fairs in Maine start with the Union Fair at the end of August and continue through September until the Fryeburg Fair in October ends the season.

8. Attend a sporting event. The Portland Pirates hockey team starts its season at the Cumberland County Civic Center in October. Enjoy minor league hockey through the fall and winter. Or check out the Maine Red Claws, Portland's NBA development league.

9. Stop by the Maine Brewers Festival, which takes place at the Portland Expo in November. New Englanders come together to celebrate the local Maine craft beer community.

10. Get spooked on one of New England's premier tours by joining the Wicked Walking Tours in Portland. You'll be exposed to humorous legends and history of haunted Portland.
