| Maine Historical Society |  | Childhood home of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, America's most beloved 19th century poet. | | Faithfully restored to the 1850s, the Wadsworth-Longfellow House was the childhood home of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Built in 1785-86 by the poet's grandfather, General Peleg Wadsworth, the house is one of the oldest brick structures on Portland's peninsula. Decorated with original furnishings and family memorabilia, guided tours offer a unique glimpse into the life of the poet's family, as well as into the cultural and social history of 19th century Portland.
